Description
Protect civilian traffic from Shivan raids, and discover a devastating new technology.
3 missions:
The Big Convoy
Getting the Jump on the Enemy
Pulling Out All the Stops
Storyline:
BoomerangÂ’s storyline is not the most original storyline and doesnÂ’t go very in-depth but it does have some great new elements that have never been introduced before. The in-game messages are also very original in the sense that the pilots and crew talk like normal people and even introduce comedy when in the battlefield!
Balance:
This is the best example of balance that I have ever seen in user-created missions, or possibly even better than most missions created by Volition. In every mission, the enemy posed a challenge, but was never too much of one. You can tell that this campaign went through a lot of testing and it paid off.
Design:
One word to describe this area: Wow! On every mission, things seemed like you were playing out the role in a cutscene. One of my favorite things was when I started the very first mission, there was a HUGE convoy lined up going directly across my HUD. It looked so cool, and the ships were all in line. Another feature that the author introduced with the campaign was a new Shivan technology known as ‘Tactical Hyperspace Jumping.’ This was done with numerous Sexps in FRED 2 allowing a ship to jump from one spot to another in battle. Who could have done it better than the author of the FRED 2 documentation himself? Other things that I loved about this campaign were that the directives were done very well, escort ships were marked in great order, he assigned hotkey groups to the ships and told you what they were, and finally objectives were done very well.
Gameplay:
I hate to say this about Volition, but this is better than any of the missions that they created. This is such a fun campaign, it has certain elements that keep you wanting to play. The funny thing is that the campaign is only three missions long and it is so great. Your enemies are always posing a challenge and when you are not in the heat of fighting, there are always cinematic events occurring. I would love to see this from mission designers more and more in the future.
Other Thoughts:
This is the one campaign that I would recommend for everyone to download.
