Description
Protect a disabled destroyer while repairs are made as the NTF launches a massive attack.
Storyline:
No Command briefing here, but not every mission needs one, and this mission's briefing makes up for it. The information is concise and useful, and the icons all match up too. I didn't notice anything wrong with the spelling or grammar, either. Looking inside the mission, there are plenty of messages, a couple of which are chatter-type messages, though most are mission critical messages. Still, there are enough there to keep it interesting. The debriefing contains some useful help if you've failed the mission, though there are a couple of small errors – such as keeping the (old) name for the Callisto, GTC Saber.
Balance:
Considering the length of this mission, it's well balanced and you'll not be taxed too badly. The mission mostly consists of dogfighting around the GTD Siphron. However, there is some bomber intercept; enough to make it important to intercept the bombers but not enough to really destroy the Siphron considering the number of friendly fighters there are. There is some capship combat but the Siphron is still not in terrible danger. A bit disappointing for a defence mission, really.
Design:
Design is nice and clean, with only a couple of minor oversights. When chaining an event, there's no need to give it a 'when' s-exp, the chain delay option can just be used instead. The event to add ships to the tech database was a nice idea but I don't think it works unless you add this mission to a campaign. The author's use of directives, AI orders and send-message-list s-exps is good, and several of these are often combined. Finally, some of the ships (namely the Areses - or is that Aresi?) are a little anachronistic. I'm willing to overlook that, though.
Gameplay:
Beware, this is a long mission. You'll do some fighter interception for over three minutes before any bombers arrive to spoil the party. However, there aren't a great number of bombers so this mission is more an extended dogfight with defensive moments every so often. That's not to say it isn't good fun, because it is, and it doesn't get too tedious, which is good. The end of the mission could frustrate some, as the abundance of hostile AA beams could finish you off. And annoy you.
Other Thoughts:
Yes, yes, I'm terribly behind on reviews. The reviews will return to you, just as soon as my free time has returned to me. 1 exam to go, so if you catch me slacking off after that, smack me. Also we have a lack of mission submissions. Once the GFS Entries come in for review I'll have a ball! :D
