Description
The hours before the NTF coup dwindle. Help Bosch before the assault begins.
Storyline:
The storyline of this mission attempts to explain the beginnings of the NTF Rebellion, by casting you as one of it's first pilots, defending Admiral Bosch himself as he travels to a GTVA station in order to retrieve files that he needs. The Command briefing and brief set the scene well though some command animations would have been nice. There are also a few cluttered icons and one icon doesnÂ’t match the ship. Still, that's nit picking. Most of the dialogue is good, though there were a few grammatical errors I spotted.
Balance:
The mission is well balanced throughout, with the pilot never getting the sense that they are overwhelmed, but still having enough enemy vessels to provide a decent level of urgency to proceedings, which is, of course, an important factor in missions. The capital ships don't provide too much danger to the Echo, but will duke it out amongst themselves very nicely. The mission isn't too hard, but does provide a fairly good level of challenge.
Design:
Design of this mission is actually rather cumbersome, with long chained event lists instead of send-message-lists and a couple of events unnamed. The player will also see that the directive to evacuate the Echo doesnÂ’t fit with the story – he's being taken to Deneb, yet the directive specifies Polaris as the destination. However, the directives do all work. The author was careful not to destroy any of the ships appearing in the FS2 campaign while using them, which is nice. The mission can be broken slightly by firing on the station before being ordered to, so don'tÂ
Gameplay:
This mission plays very nicely – a bit like one of the early missions in FS2 in terms of the scale of the combat. This is probably due to the small wings and capital ships. The gameplay is involving and also goes on around you, and the start of the mission is really tense, with the music setting it off just right. I like this a lot, and the action is fairly exciting too, though over pretty quickly as each wing is destroyed.
Other Thoughts:
A long time in coming, this review. Sorry. Also, why does everyone use the GTD Agamemnon as his or her capship? I know there are some obvious reasons, it's a rhetorical question.
