Description
Soften up a Typhon class Vasudan destroyer for attack by three Fenris class Terran capital ships.
Storyline:
Apparently, the PVD Neptune is being a problem, but there are no Orions to bring against it. So, Alpha and Beta wings will eliminate the fighter escort for the Neptune so that three Fenrises - the Alabama, Oaxaca, and the Ontario - can destroy it. This is rather original, and the briefing is well-done
Balance:
The in-game balance is almost perfect. While the destruction of the fighter escort is relatively simple, the defense of the three Fenrises while they hammer at the Neptune is not. It would have been nice if the player was able to choose a different missile, as the Intceptors provided are not as good for cracking open bombers as Hornets. Still, the mission is well-balanced, though it is extremely hard to keep all three Fenrises alive, and it's generally a bit tougher than most missions.
Design:
For the most part, the design is good. The enemy comes in nice-sized waves, and there are no real problems. However, there are only three wing names for the 25 or so fighters and bombers, and some computers lacking 3D cards may experience crashing, so beware. I would reccomend restarting your computer and then disabling unneeded programs before playing Trident.
Gameplay:
Simply fun. If you need to practice stopping bombers, this is the mission for it. You'll need to shoot down plenty of Tsunamis mid-flight if you want to keep all of the cruisers alive, and sometimes you may take out a Tsunami at close enough range that it fries all of your subsystems and leaves you dead in the water, waiting for the support ship to arrive. This is not for beginners, as being killed is a definate possibility, but there are few enough above-average difficulty missions as it is.
Other Thoughts:
This is one of Peter Drake's first missions, and the example used in the first iterations of his FRED help document, but it's still high-quality.
