Description
Help capture an arms smuggler. This is a complete
rewrite of ASOR.FSM to fix errors. Let me know what you think.
Storyline:
(Note: This is a re-review of the authors first attempt in which the mission received a 0.5 star rating)
The command briefing in this mission is now excellent and well thought out. The pilot briefing is still somewhat redundant in the use of its icons, but the spelling and grammer errors have been fixed. The new debriefings have minor errors though. The author has done a good job reworking it.
Balance:
This was an impossible red alert mission on medium. Now this missions
balance is now spot-on, and mainly anything you want to make it from easy to impossible. The only low point that is seen is the SS Venturer is now to WEAK to account for good balance at any skill level. Other than this you can outfit Alpha (that now has 4 fighters) with any Terran class fighter that is your favorite, with a good selection of weapons.
Design:
All I can say about the re-design by the author of this mission is excellent! All previous errors in the mission seem to have been repaired. There were only minor errors seen. Although some messages are still out of sync, at one point the SS Venturer surrenders according to a message once you disarm it, but it DOES NOT affect gameplay are it remains hostile and the game goes on. Properly operating damage monitors and directives are used. The only design flaws I could see was a long lull in the action until Delta wing arrives (pirates). Another long delay until they show thier true colors, and after they are destroyed you sit and wait for the docking and the end of the mission.
Gameplay:
Gameplay and re-playability for this mission is now excellent. You are able to choose your level of difficulty both with the main game difficulty setting and with your ship and weapons loadout making this an excellent mission for both novice and experienced pilots. I'm going to change the difficulty of the Venturer myself then add it to my single player collection :)
Other Thoughts:
This is a prime example of what an author can do if they sit down and LEARN what makes a mission. This author took his mission from a one-half star mission rating to an oustanding mission of near Volition quality. I commend him and offer him as an example to the other .5 to 2 star mission authors. I get tired of sounding like a broken record. RESEARCH, KNOW FRED, BETA TEST. This author obviously did this and you can see the result.
