Description
Player is sent out to destroy cruiser when something happens and everyone is scared...so you end up having to kill stuff...its fun! :)

Storyline: 2.5 Stars
The briefings are less than exceptional. While they do get the required information across, there is a distinct amount of badly-writted english. Not grammatically wrong, perhaps, but it ruins the atmosphere to read "Destroying the Lucifer was pretty much the last thing we did". The in-game messages are passable, however.

Balance: 3.0 Stars
Ambush At The Edge is rather well balanced, although a bit easy from my point of view. I've played a lot of FreeSpace, so my skill level is likely better than the average, so for most, this will be a mission with a standard level of difficulty. The weapons availability is appropriatly high. The enemy is present in well-set numbers, and a reinforcement wing is both available and needed.

Design: 2.0 Stars
There are, however, serious design issues with Ambush At The Edge. Most notably, the only primary objective is to destroy a Shivan cruiser, and the elimination of the various fighters isn't even a secondary or Bonus objective. Messages still instruct the player to knock out whatever small craft show up, but these don't actually have to be followed! Also, there is a seemingly pointless secondary objective to protect Beta wing. Why? Are they all the sons and daughters of powerful people? They're most assuredly not rookies...

Gameplay: 2.0 Stars
There's no real fun to be had playing Ambush at the Edge. The plot is minimalist, the enemy is in small enough numbers that there are no tense, massive furballs, and to be honest, there's nothing new in Ambush at the Edge. Every element it has can be found elsewhere, done much better.

Other Thoughts:
Since there are other missions with the file name "ambush.fsm", You may have to rename the file to something like AmbushEdge.fsm

Bottom Line: Nothing new, and nothing done really right.
Highs: Well, it doesn't outright suck, which is rare enough in these days...
Lows: But it has nothing going for it at all, and has bad objective design
