Description
A Terran scientific expedition, trapped behind Shivan lines, launches a heroic mission to disrupt Shivan supplies headed for the front.
Storyline:
The storyline is very well-done. A Terrran scout group is trapped in Shivan space and decides to go out with a bang. They take their small force and fighter escort to strike at Shivan shipping. The briefing is well-done, presenting an image of the player's group taking their pathetic group and trying to do something with it, and there's something rousing and almost patriotic about seeing a Faustus, a Chronos, and a Posidon crusading along to do their part in the war.
Balance:
Supply is welll-balanced, though it can be difficult to hunt down escaping freighters with your small fighter wing before they reach the jump node. While the weapons selection is rather limited, it is about the size I'd expect the fighter escort for some scientists to have available. The only problem is that small one of intercepting freighters, even if their escort is destroyed.
Design:
The design in Supply is sharp. Your convoy moves to a position between the two Subspace nodes, fights well. The enemy fighter escorts seem a bit small, but the real dangers are the weapons mounted on ships like the Asmodeus freighters. There are no real problems with it, from a design point of view - except for one. If a single freighter is allowed to escape, no more will ever come, and the primary objective - to destroy all freighters - cannot come true.
Gameplay:
Unfortunatally, the mission simply isn't all that enjoyable. Oh, it's okay, but it's just not really fun. Each wave of ships coming through is pretty much like the one before it, and the ship left behind - containing the noncombatants - is never really threatened. While the "strike team" must travel through an asteroid belt, it seems tacked-on, only an excuse to have something to see for the five minutes it takes to reach the point where the enemy will be.
Other Thoughts:
I don't know why this isn't fun, but it isn't. Something about the way the freighters come and are caught and die or flee and jump out at the nodes is simply not fun.
