Description
You are sent out to destroy a enemy cruiser taking on supplies. Depot is lightly guarded. GTC has sent back-up.
Storyline:
The storyline here is simple: There's a cargo base, and GTF command wants it. Disable or destroy the resident Cain, and don't blow any cargo up. The enemy will send in reinforcements, so just wait for the cavalry. The plot isn't exactly an epic tale of war, but it's done well.
Balance:
Kinda bad. While there are just enough enemy fighters to keep things interesting, at one point four Cains are in the battle - but they're opposed by your three wings as well as three Fenrises and a Typhon. The Cains didn't stand a chance. Also, while the player can choose any craft to take into battle, there's no reason to fly a Hercules because there are almost no weapons available. Just to get the ML-16 off my wing Ulysses, I had to use the Prometheuses on Gamma Wing. I was actually fighting Shivans with an Avenger, a Prometheus, and an MX-50. Why no Interceptors? I don't know. This might even be bearable if the designer had offered an explanation for why there are over 40 ships in the fighter bays, but barely enough weapons and ammo to outfit three wings. Still, the mission would have been better served with better weapons and more Scorpions.
Design:
For the most part, great. While none of the mass of cargo containers is assigned a cargo for scanner-happy pilots, The general layout of the cargo depot is believable. There are two major design issues here, one of which never actually becomes a problem, by the pure inexperience of the mission's designer. First, there can be up to four Cains, a Typhon, and four Fenrises, plus a whole flock of fighters and the resident cargo boxes. I was absolutely shocked that I experienced no slowdown. If anyone does, please mail me. I never crashed, either. If you've ever wanted to try a mission with lots of huge ships but feared that you system wasn't up to the task, try out Cargo Attack. This mission might get a full three or four stars, but for the second bug in the mission: upon entering the battlefield, every mission objective immediately become achieved. You heard me. Every one. As a test, I warped out 5 seconds from starting the mission, and achieved everything. That's sad. I can't believe he actually submitted a map to Xanadu's Archive with a bug the size of an Orion class destroyer in it.
Gameplay:
Pretty good. There are enough fighters to keep things interesting, and seeing a phreaking trio of Fenrises warp in to save the day when more Cains arrive is really cheer-inspiring. I've never seen an occasion that more earned the expression "The Cavalry has arrived!". You're worrying about how you'll take on four Cains with just three heavily damaged wings with low-quality weapons, and all of a sudden the Hunter squadron arrives like the Hand of God, wiping away the opposition. Still, the balance needs work. As I said, better weapons and more Shivans would have made for a better mission.
Other Thoughts:
If this is fixed, I'll take another look at the mission. Maybe then it will be one of the best. It has incredible promise. If some weapons and Shivans are added, and some way needs to be found to make the friendly capital ships a bit less likely to knock out the enemy - that is, some way the player needed in the end. Still, Wickstra looks to be a good mission designer, if he starts testing his missions himself.
